2025 Year-End Message from AFP of Utah

As we wrap up the year, I want to thank our incredible Salt Lake City treasury and finance community for your support and engagement with AFP of Utah.

This year has been one of progress, collaboration, and resilience. It’s a privilege to work alongside such dedicated professionals.

A special thank you to our Board Members and volunteers who make our initiatives possible—and to Clark Smith, CPA, CTP and Miriam Santos for their years of service as they step down from the board. Your contributions have been invaluable!

As we head into the new year, I hope that you and your families experienced peace, joy, and a well-deserved opportunity over the holidays to reflect on all you’ve accomplished.

Wasatch Community Gardens Service Activity

Several of your AFP of Utah members completed this year's association service project through Wasatch Community Gardens. On October 23rd they went to Harrison Community Garden in the afternoon. They worked on arranging the frames of grow beds as part of the garden’s irrigation system repairs and adjustments to the newly constructed area.

Thank you to those who were able to make it and contribute time and energy to this meaningful project.

Why AFP of Utah?

Today we are interviewing our newest board member Joshua Prisbrey, Foreign Exchange and Bank Relationship Manager at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and our current AFP of Utah Program Chair.

1) Why did you first sign up for an AFP of Utah event or membership?

A member of AFP invited me to an event, and to be honest, I initially came for the lunch…. But after the event, I was genuinely impressed by how many professionals come together – learning, networking, and staying current with their continuing education. It didn’t take long before I started looking forward to each event to reconnect with the incredible people that come to these events.

2) And what compelled you to volunteer your time on the board of directors?

I was at lunch with Sheron Riggs, when my boss, Greg Tarbet, mentioned that I was available to serve on board. I was shocked! Not long after, I got a call from Sheron inviting me to volunteer. It’s been such a great opportunity. I’ve learned a lot, met some amazing people, and got to know fantastic event presenters. It’s been a great way for me to learn and grow professionally.

3) What is a favorite highlight- an event, board accomplishment, member success story?

One of the highlights for me was facilitating a panel discussion with Steven Olson and Steven Mitchell. It really pushed me outside my comfort zone. We tackled topics like payments, earnings, economic challenges, uncertainty, and fraud—complex issues that made for a compelling conversation. Moderating that panel with two brilliant professionals was both exciting and humbling. I look back and think, 'They let me do that?!' It was such a cool and rewarding opportunity.

4) How have you grown in knowledge or skills during your time leading at the AFP of Utah?

I truly believe that leadership and learning go hand in hand. Serving on the council has helped me build confidence and grow in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve learned so much from the other council members—they’re exceptional individuals and true professionals. I genuinely look forward to our meetings, and I’m grateful to consider them my friends.

5) I also see that you are CTP certified, can you share how that certification has supported you professionally?

The CTP was challenging for me. You can ask any of my colleagues and they will tell you how much I worked and studied for that thing. But that’s what made it so rewarding. There is something powerful about setting a goal that really stretches you and then achieving it.

An Interview with an AFP of Utah Board Member

Why AFP of Utah?

Today we are interviewing our long time board member Miriam Santos of Enbridge Gas, and our current Secretary with the AFP of Utah.

1) Why did you first sign up for an AFP of Utah event or membership?

The Treasurer of Enbridge Gas/Questar, Tony Ivins, a past member and officer of the AFP of UT, strongly recommended it.

2) And what compelled you to volunteer your time on the board of directors?

Some members of the Board reached out to me directly and asked if I would be interested with serving on the board. Given how I valued the connections I had made and how informative the meetings had been, I agreed to help keep the association moving forward.

3) What is a favorite highlight- an event, board accomplishment, member success story?

I’d actually like to highlight two annual events. The Economic Update presented by senior economists has been quite compelling and informative. The other event would be the Service Project. It provides a useful service to the community and enables us to interact with other members in a fun and positive environment.

4) How have you grown in knowledge or skills during your time leading at the AFP of Utah?

As well as remaining current on various topics, this has helped me hone my listening and decision making skills while working with great fellow board members.

Greetings Fellow Treasury and Finance Professionals:
It is hard to believe that the end of 2024 is quickly approaching! As we all look forward to our final AFP events of the year & begin to plan for 2025, I want to give an update on the financial health of AFP of Utah.

Your membership dues and event registration fees, together with contributions from generous sponsors, fund a variety of events that we all are able to participate in throughout the year. Our goal each year with the budget is to fund all of our initiatives at the lowest possible cost to our members, while maintaining adequate cash reserves for the future.

So far this year, we’ve held five lunch & learn events as well as a fun social activity at Top Golf. We’ve been able to cover the cost of these events for the most part with member dues. In addition to dues, we received a generous $2,500 donation from PNC Bank. With those inflows having been received and a few expenses that will be incurred before the end of the year, we expect year-end inflows to slightly exceed outflows, thus accomplishing our goal stated above.

Hard to believe we are halfway through 2024, on behalf of the board we thank you for your membership, your stewardship, and your involvement so far this year and look forward to reconnecting after our summer meeting break on August 29th –Topgolf AFP Social Event.

The session focuses on the financial supply chain, a key aspect for all treasury and finance departments as well as for financial institutions offering trade and working capital finance.

AFP of Utah members donate $600 + to The Asian Association of Utah

This year our AFP Service Project is collecting monetary donations to help support The Asian Association of Utah dba Refugee & Immigrant Center and we invite you to join us. In the last year, we have seen the overall need to help support refugees as the U.S. withdrew our Troops from Afghanistan and the war in Ukraine. The Refugee center mission also includes helping victims of human trafficking.

The AFP of Utah will buy up to 10 pizzas for the organization that generates the highest overall dollar donations, and will match the donation of our members up to $2,500.

So far our members have donated at least $600.

Donations can be made directly through the Asian Association website https://aau-slc.org/donate/ then email your receipt to afpofutah@gmail.com or by emailing afpofutah@gmail.com indicating how much you would like to donate so they can generate an invoice to pay by credit card.

Our donation period will end on Monday, September 19th.
